Mexico Hidden Gems: Off the Beaten Path Destinations 💎

Looking to find new unique locations to visit in Mexico? If you want to avoid the crowds in top destinations like Cancún or Tulum, we have compiled a list of great destinations to consider visiting instead with the easiest routes and the best accommodation options. Below, you'll be inspired to explore more of what Mexico has to offer.

Visit Bacalar "The Maldives of Mexico"

Getting There:

Bacalar is located in the Quintana Roo region of Mexico on the border of Belize. You'll find that the closest major airport is actually located in Belize at John Greif II Airport (SPR) in San Pedro Town. However, there are other airports you can fly into that won't require you to go through multiple ports of immigration. The closest airport in Mexico is Chetumal International Airport (CTM) which is approximately a 30-minute drive/bus ride from Bacalar.

Alternatively, for cheaper flight options, you could fly into Tulum International Airport (TQO) and grab an $18 (2 to 3-hour) bus to Bacalar.

Visit Manzanillo "The Santorini of Mexico"

Getting There:

Manzanillo is located in the Colima region of Mexico towards the southwest part of the country. Several airlines offer direct flights from the US to Playa de Oro International Airport (ZLO) in Manzanillo, such as Aeroméxico and Alaska Airlines.

Alternatively, you can find cheaper flights to Guadalajara International Airport (GDL), it's then a three and a half hour drive to Manzanillo, or a four-hour bus journey.

Visit the Hot Springs of Grutas Tolantongo

Getting There:

We recommend flying into Mexico City (MEX), as it's the most affordable airport option nearby.

The drive to Tolantongo from Mexico City is considered to be pretty straightforward. You can rent a car and drive two-and-a-half hours to three hours north, or you can travel with a tour company like Turitour and embark on a full-day tour to the location by bus for around $899 MXN or around $56 USD.
