REAL ID Enforcement

The REAL ID Act, introduced in 2005, establishes national standards for issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards. It includes requirements to verify the documents provided when applying for an ID.

Full enforcement of the act begins on May 7th, 2025.

What does this mean for you? Starting on this date, you’ll still be able to travel domestically within the US using your ID, but it must meet REAL ID compliance standards. This is indicated by:

• A star on your ID, or

• The word “enhanced” on it.

UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)

Starting January 8th, 2025, travelers to the United Kingdom will need to complete an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip. This applies to visits to England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

How to Apply for an ETA in Six Simple Steps

  1. Go to the UK government’s official ETA website to begin your application.

  2. Submit a clear photo of the passport you will use for travel.

  3. Use your phone or mobile device to complete a face scan (not required for children under 9).

  4. Provide a recent photo as part of the application.

  5. Complete a set of questions about your trip and background.

  6. Pay the Fee: £10 (~$12.20 USD) to finalize your application.

Once approved, your ETA will be valid for multiple entries into the UK over a two-year period.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS)

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new visa waiver program designed to enhance security across the European Union.

Similar to the ESTA used by the US for travelers from allied nations, the ETIAS will be a quick and affordable process. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Cost: Approximately €7 (≈ $7.50 USD).

  • Validity: It’s valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

  • Convenience: Once approved, there’s no need to reapply for subsequent visits during the validity period.

  • Start Date: Sometime in 2025 (no exact date yet).
