Hit the wild slopes of Mad River Glen, Vermont

With a wealth of skiing and snowboarding options, it’s hard to choose just one favorite in Vermont. This Presidents’ Day we recommend you opt for something a bit different and check out the challenging, untamed runs at Mad River Glen, where the motto is “Ski It If You Can.” The skiing may be “mad”, but with its close-knit community vibe and wealth of budget options, Mad River is the low-cost laid-back answer to the intensity and crowds of other ski towns. Coming in at a little over 5 hours drive from NYC, it’s easy to head out on a Friday evening and still have a solid 2-3 days on the slopes. If you’re not looking to drive, you can catch cheap weekend flights from New York to nearby Burlington.

Go on a culinary city tour in Montreal

Just slightly further north into Canada you’ll find yourself in Montreal, where you’ll be met with cold weather but relatively sunny days. Montreal is at its most picturesque in winter, where the regular dustings of snow coat the city in a luminous glow. But the best part about visiting Montreal in the winter isn’t the scenery, but the many cozy cafes, intimate bars, and late night restaurants that invite you to linger over hearty cold-weather fare. Whether you’re tucking into a mountain of Poutine in a small corner shop or sitting down to a five-course meal at an upscale farm-to-table eatery, there’s a lot to love about Montreal’s culinary scene.

Hike by day and stay cozy by night in Letchworth State Park

Often called “the Grand Canyon of the East”, Letchworth State Park is the ideal place to detach from the city and catch your breath in nature. While trail access is more limited in the winter months, there are still many places to take a long walk and you also have the option of cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and other cold-weather activities. Bring a couple friends or your partner and rent a cabin where you can unwind from your outdoor adventures at the end of the day. About a 5 hour drive north of NYC, Letchworth lets you pack in day hikes, relaxing evenings reading by the fire, and more into one long weekend.

Taste your way through the wines of the Finger Lakes Region

You don’t have to fly all the way to Napa Valley to sample local wines straight from the source. The Finger Lakes Region, just under 5 hours from NYC, offers wine tastings, winery tours, cooking classes, and exceptional dining experiences. Families will love taking a kid-friendly pizza-making class while friends and couples can indulge in a multi-stop winery tour. Be sure to take a break from the heady reds and sparkling rosés to take a stroll along one of the many lakes that remain still and placid in the calm winter months.

If you need a serious vitamin D fix, book some cheap round-trip flights to Fort Lauderdale, and less than an hour north you’ll find Delray Beach. Far from the crowds of the bigger cities and beach resorts nearby, Delray Beach is a small-city oasis with lots to offer besides its stretches of white sandy beaches. Families with kids will enjoy scoping out flora and fauna at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands Park, and art aficionados can wander in and out of galleries in the thriving Pineapple Grove Arts District.
