Looking to travel during another month of the year? Or during a public holiday?

City Trips in April

Looking for the perfect Spring Break getaway to a bustling city with fun nightlife and tons of art and culture? Below we've compiled some of our top recommendations for a city trip.

Madrid

Those fancying a European city should definitely consider Madrid. The Spanish capital is a popular destination all year round. In April, the days are usually sunny, there's little rain, and the average temperature is 66°F - perfect for discovering the city's famous sights! Check out the stunning Royal Palace, visit the huge parks like the Casa de Campo and taste the local delicacies. The city is usually buzzing, especially in trendy neighbourhoods like Embajadores, which has loads of bars and lively nightlife.

Melbourne, Australia

With its warm-but-not-hot weather and its mix of laid-back beach vibes and hipster credentials, Melbourne is the ideal place for an April vacation. Take a dip at the St Kilda Sea Baths, check out the graffiti on Hosier Lane or walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens. Those who want a break from the city can book a day tour to the Yarra Valley vineyards to sample a variety of wines from this cooler climate.

Coffee lovers take note: if you’re looking for the best place to grab your morning cappuccino, you’ll have your work cut out for you - Melbourne has been at the forefront of the third-wave coffee movement, focusing on high-quality beans and exquisite presentation.

Washington D.C.

You don’t have to fly all the way to Japan to see beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom. The US capital comes to life between March and April every year, when the National Cherry Blossom Festival is underway; the delicate pale pink flowers start coming in and the streets are blanketed in petals like a springtime snow.

The flowers aren’t the only reason to come to Washington, D.C. this time of year - April is peak travel for a reason. The days are cool and sunny, making it easy to hit hotspots like the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial or spend a few hours walking down the iconic U Street. The best part? If you catch some April showers, there is a wealth of top-tier museums to choose from.

Newport Beach, California

An easy weekend trip for stressed out Los Angeles, the California gem of Newport Beach has long been popular with the summer crowd. It may be overlooked in April, but this month is one of the best times to do some whale-watching as they migrate from the balmy California shores at the close of the winter season. Enjoy the small-town flavor with a stroll down the Newport Beach boardwalk and an afternoon at the retro amusement park, Balboa Fun Zone. If you come between April 25th and May 2nd of this year, you can catch an evening show at the Newport Beach Film Festival before heading out for a late dinner of fresh seafood right by the water.

Lisbon, Portugal

The best time to visit Portugal is in spring or fall. At this time of the year, the weather is very pleasant across the country, between 64°F and 77°F. In the evening it cools down a bit, but you can still sit comfortably outdoors. At the same time, popular places in Portugal are not yet as crowded as in summer.

If you are looking for a more adventurous Lisbon experience, away from the well-known and well-signposted miradouros (viewpoints) , then the Panorâmico de Monsanto is just right for you. The LXFactory and the adjacent Village Underground in the Alcântara district are also worth a visit. The LXFactory is a kind of creative and hipster district, housed in old industrial halls, and exudes its very own charm.

Miami, Florida

Located on the southeast coast of Florida in Biscayne Bay, Miami is one of the most famous cities in the United States. Florida is not called the Sunshine State for nothing, as the state is spoiled by the sun and pleasantly warm temperatures all year round.

Since Miami Beach and especially the South Beach district are known for the almost endless, wide sandy beach, relaxing and sunbathing here is at the top of my list. Driving along Ocean Drive is a must when visiting Miami. It's not often that you get the chance to see alligators in the wild, so a visit to Everglades National Park is well worth it.

Other Top Destinations to Visit in April

April showers bring May flowers, but this month isn’t all about drizzly days and post-spring-break blues. It’s the start of spring, and whether you are embracing the rain at the mirrored salt flats of Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia or escaping to drier areas like the plains of Zambia, April is an excellent time to travel. It’s also the start of the cherry blossom season in destinations across the world—most famously in Japan, but also in South Korea, Canada, and across the U.S. Keep it close to home with one of our domestic options, or take advantage of lower flight prices between spring break and summer to explore somewhere further afield.

Zambia, Africa

If you’ve always dreamed of experiencing the flora and fauna of Africa up close, head to Zambia this April. Falling between the rainy season, when safari camps are generally closed, and the summer season, when prices are high and there is an influx of tourists, April has great deals, perfect weather, and allows you to see Zambia in full bloom. We recommend heading to the South Luangwa National Park, where knowledgeable guides can teach you about the more than 450 bird and animal species that populate the area. While in Zambia, be sure to take a stop at the breathtaking Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, is an impressive sight any time of the year. Thousands of miles of super-flat salt crust expand in every direction to the surrounding mountains, which gives one the feeling of looking across an unusually still lake. April is the best time to go if you’re looking to catch the neat visual trick caused by the rainfall—as the flats are covered in water, they turn into a mirror, giving the impression that you are walking on water. If you’ve already stopped over in the salt flat, head south to the Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon), a martian-looking salt lake of pinkish-reds and pure whites where groups of flamingos roam freely.

Cherry Blossoms in Japan

Going to Japan is an experience during any time of the year, but Cherry Blossom season is something else. The Japanese word hanami can be translated to something like "flower viewing," which is a popular tradition for Japanese folks and a great attraction for tourists. Blooming time usually takes place between the end of March and the beginning of April. Every year, forecasts come out to give people an idea of when the blooming should take place

Tokyo - start: March 22 / full bloom: March 30

Sapporo - earliest: May 2 / full bloom: May 5

Sendai - start: April 8 / full bloom: April 13

Kanazawa - start: April 4 / full bloom: April 10

Nagoya - start date: March 25 / full bloom: April 4

Kyoto - start date: March 27 / full bloom: April 5

Osaka - start: March 28 / full bloom: April 5

Fukuoka - start date: March 23 / full bloom: April 1

The life of the cherry blossom, is quite short and usually lasts, at most, a couple of weeks. During the first week, the cherry trees will blossom until they reach their full bloom and splendor ("mankai" in Japanese). A week later, the blossoms will fall off the trees and hanami will be over. Although there is a forecast, it is a very weather-dependent phenomenon. So, if it starts to be warmer than expected, it will occur earlier. If the weather is not good, it will occur later or it may shorten the time the trees are in bloom.
