In April, the days are usually sunny, there's little rain, and the average temperature is 66°F - perfect for discovering the city's famous sights! Check out the stunning Royal Palace, visit the huge parks like the Casa de Campo and taste the local delicacies. The city is usually buzzing, especially in trendy neighbourhoods like Embajadores, which has loads of bars and lively nightlife.

Melbourne, Australia

With its warm-but-not-hot weather and its mix of laid-back beach vibes and hipster credentials, Melbourne is the ideal place for an April vacation. Take a dip at the St Kilda Sea Baths, check out the graffiti on Hosier Lane or walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens. Those who want a break from the city can book a day tour to the Yarra Valley vineyards to sample a variety of wines from this cooler climate.

You don’t have to fly all the way to Japan to see beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom. The US capital comes to life between March and April every year, when the National Cherry Blossom Festival is underway; the delicate pale pink flowers start coming in and the streets are blanketed in petals like a springtime snow.

The flowers aren’t the only reason to come to Washington, D.C. this time of year - April is peak travel for a reason. The days are cool and sunny, making it easy to hit hotspots like the National Mall and the Lincoln Memorial or spend a few hours walking down the iconic U Street. The best part? If you catch some April showers, there is a wealth of top-tier museums to choose from.

Newport Beach, California

An easy weekend trip for stressed out Los Angeles, the California gem of Newport Beach has long been popular with the summer crowd. It may be overlooked in April, but this month is one of the best times to do some whale-watching as they migrate from the balmy California shores at the close of the winter season. Driving along Ocean Drive is a must when visiting Miami. It's not often that you get the chance to see alligators in the wild, so a visit to Everglades National Park is well worth it.

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, is an impressive sight any time of the year. Thousands of miles of super-flat salt crust expand in every direction to the surrounding mountains, which gives one the feeling of looking across an unusually still lake. April is the best time to go if you’re looking to catch the neat visual trick caused by the rainfall—as the flats are covered in water, they turn into a mirror, giving the impression that you are walking on water. If you’ve already stopped over in the salt flat, head south to the Laguna Colorada (Red Lagoon), a martian-looking salt lake of pinkish-reds and pure whites where groups of flamingos roam freely.
