If you enjoyed our recent post about buying a house in Japan for $500, you'll be happy to read that more and more ridiculously cheap homes are popping up for sale around the world — this time in Sicily, Italy. The beautiful village of Caltagirone in this region has started a campaign to sell houses for $1!

Similar to with the initiatives mentioned in the Japan post, the primary objective is to combat abandonment and at the same time recover the uninhabited buildings in the historic center. Caltagirone is a city of 37,000 inhabitants renowned for its historic center (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site), for the tradition of nativity scenes and for the abundance of ceramics.

Caltagirone, declared a UNESCO heritage site together with the Baroque villages of the Noto Valley, is a real jewel. Here you can take a pleasant walk along the spectacular staircase of Santa Maria del Monte, consisting of 142 steps and 426 feet long. The staircase connects the town hall square to the homonymous church, with all the facades of the steps tiled with majolica.

But how does the one-dollar case work? The regulation has just been approved by the Municipality and we still need to wait for the official announcement. As in many other similar initiatives, however, the buyer undertakes to submit a renovation project of the property within one year.

The objective of the initiative is in fact "to enhance, in particular the real estate properties of the historic center, simplifying and rationalizing the mediation process between the parties involved in the sale of the property, thus favoring the recovery of the properties. it is the enhancement of the tourism-hospitality sector through the development of new residential settlements".
