We all know that points and miles are one of the main keys to traveling like a pirate. But it's not always the case that you can get extra value when transferring your transferrable points to airline and hotel programs. For this September, American Express is offering a whopping 12 transfer bonuses, so if you've got some points sitting around, or have had your eyes on some particular flights like I have, now's the time to transfer and book!

Still looking to learn more about getting into points and miles? Check out these great sign up offers that can help you get the ball rolling!

Details

Right now, these 12 Amex transfer bonuses are live:

  • Aeroplan: 1,000 Amex Points = 1,150 Aeroplan points (Air Canada)

  • Hilton Honors: 1,000 Amex points = 2,600 Hilton points

  • Marriott Bonvoy: 1,000 Amex points = 1,200 Marriott points

  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: 1,000 Amex points = 1,300 Virgin points

  • Aer Lingus: 1,000 Amex points = 1,250 Avios

  • AeroMexico: 1,000 Amex points = 1,920 Premier Points

  • Air France/KLM: 1,000 Amex points = 1,250 Flying Blue Miles

  • Avianca LifeMiles: 1,000 Amex points = 1,250 Flying Blue Miles

  • British Airways Executive Club: 1,000 Amex points = 1,250 Avios

  • Choice Privileges: 1,000 Amex points = 1,250 Choice Privileges

  • HawaiianMiles: 1,000 Amex points = 1,200 HawaiianMiles

  • Qantas Frequent Flyer: 500 Amex points = 600 Qantas Points

Typically, it's best to only transfer when you're ready to book. Otherwise, you risk having points sitting in a program that might not be of as much value as transferrable currency, and many programs still even have expiration dates for your points

For example, I've been keeping my eyes on this flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid on Iberia, but booked through British Airways Avios. The normal off-peak price in miles is 25,500 points, which would usually mean 26,000 Amex points transferred to British Airways. With this transfer bonus you can transfer 21,000 and have enough Avios to book — that's a great discount!

Pirate Tip: If you're looking to transfer to an airline, see which program has the best redemption rates here. Just make sure to consider the taxes & fees, since they can also vary a lot depending on the program and available routes.
