In a country where the tourism sector is worth about 1/5 of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product), it is essential to be prepared for summer tourism — especially after the difficulties of 2020. For this reason, Greece has announced that it will allow entry to all tourists without quarantine (both the vaccinated at Covid-19 and all the others with a negative test), by May 14!

Details

Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis took advantage of his speech at the ITB tourism fair in Berlin to announce the date and better explain the plan that Greece is developing. The new health protocols will enter the testing phase in April (with some selected European countries and others where the vaccination campaign is further ahead, such as Israel) and will be fully implemented in May, with gradual reopening to be ready for the start of the tourist season.

Minister Theoharis specified that not only vaccinated people and those in possession of a negative Covid-19 test (PCR or antigenic) will be admitted, but also those who can prove that they have Covid-19 antibodies. Arriving tourists will be subjected to sample tests as an additional safety measure, but the use of the rapid test will make the process very fast. Another important measure is the one that provides any cost linked to possible positive Covid-19 of tourists in Greece to be covered by the national health system and not by the traveler. Likewise, tourists will have the same obligations as locals, such as the current obligation to wear masks.

The reopening of international tourism will also help limit the damage to the Greek economy. The expectations are to reach a maximum of 50% of the 30+ million tourists that Greece received until 2019. To help the sector as much as possible, the minister said that, after the vaccination of elderly and vulnerable people is completed, it will be the turn of tourism workers immediately, so that they can reopen safely for both guests and workers themselves.

Theoharis also unveiled the slogan of this tourist season, in response to the need we all have for a well-deserved vacation: "All you want is Greece". The idea is that a holiday in Greece will help to regain a smile after a, particularly difficult year for everyone.
