How to Get to Mt. Fuji from Tokyo:
By Bus
The most convenient and affordable option is the highway bus. You can catch a direct bus from Shinjuku Station to Mt. Fuji’s 5th station. The journey takes around 2.5 hours, and the fare is roughly $13.50 one way. It’s easy and budget-friendly, though be prepared for possible traffic delays on busy weekends or holidays.
By Train
Taking the Fuji Excursion train is another great option. This comfortable and scenic train ride will get you from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station, which is a great jumping-off point for exploring Mt. Fuji. The ride takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes, and tickets cost about $12 for adults, $7 for kids. It's faster than the bus and more comfortable, though it’s best to book in advance as seats fill up quickly.
By Chartered Car
If you want a little extra comfort, you can hire a private car. While this is the most expensive option (starting around $400 for a day), it offers flexibility, and you can easily explore the area at your own pace. This is a great choice if you prefer a more personalized experience.
Best Times to Visit Mt. Fuji:
Spring (March to May):
Spring is one of the most scenic times to visit Mt. Fuji as the area comes to life with cherry blossoms. It’s a beautiful time to get those iconic photos with Mt. Fuji as a backdrop. Just be aware that Mt. Fuji might not be as visible on some days due to spring clouds. But when the skies are clear, the views are incredible!
Summer (June to September):
Summer is the official climbing season for Mt. Fuji, and it’s when the trails are open and the facilities are running. However, this is also when Mt. Fuji is the hardest to see from Tokyo due to humidity and clouds. Still, if you're planning to hike, this is the time to go.
Fall (October to November):
For the best views and stunning fall foliage around Mt. Fuji, autumn is the time to go. The colors are breathtaking, and the weather is clear and crisp—perfect for outdoor activities and sightseeing around the mountain.
Winter (December to February):
Winter is by far the best time to get a crystal-clear view of Mt. Fuji. The mountain is often covered in snow, making for the iconic snowy peak image. However, winter climbing is not recommended as the conditions can be dangerous, especially for beginners.
Pirate Tip 🏴☠️: Want to skip the crowds and see Mt. Fuji at its best? Take a day trip to Lake Kawaguchiko in the fall for gorgeous foliage views with the mountain in the background!
