Munich is getting a little extra magic this Christmas! ✨ From November 28 through December 6, 2026, HBO Max is bringing the world's first Harry Potter Christmas market to the city's Praterinsel, complete with wizarding-world treats, themed photo opportunities, and a few surprises still under wraps. Even better, admission is completely free, and you don't need a ticket or reservation. For Harry Potter fans who've always dreamed of experiencing Christmas at Hogwarts, Munich just became a particularly tempting holiday destination.
Munich's Harry Potter Christmas market opens November 28 and runs through December 6, 2026, on the city's historic Praterinsel.
Admission is completely free for everyone, with no tickets, advance reservations, or registration required.
HBO Max is organizing the world's first Harry Potter Christmas market to celebrate its upcoming television adaptation of the books.
Harry Potter-themed photo opportunities and food are confirmed, with additional activities and surprises still to be announced.
The market runs for just nine days, ending December 6, nearly three weeks before Christmas.
HBO's new Harry Potter series premieres December 25, giving fans an early look at its reimagined wizarding world.
Munich's traditional Marienplatz Christmas market runs November 20–December 24, allowing visitors to enjoy both celebrations during the same trip.
Munich's Christmas markets are already wonderful places to spend a December evening, with their wooden stalls, glowing decorations, and enormous Christmas trees. This year, though, visitors have something rather unusual to look forward to. HBO Max is transforming an island in the middle of the city into a celebration of Harry Potter, bringing a little of the wizarding world to Bavaria.
According to the official announcement from Warner Bros. Discovery Germany, the market will be inspired by Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (known to American audiences as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), the first installment in the upcoming HBO television adaptation. Rather than recreating the original movies, the event will give visitors an early look at the visual world of the new series. HBO Max Germany has also been sharing updates on Instagram, so we'd recommend checking their official account for the latest announcements and event details.

HBO Max has promised a festive experience designed for witches, wizards, and Muggles of all ages. Visitors can look forward to themed activities, special photo opportunities, and food inspired by the Harry Potter universe. The decorations and photo settings will reflect the upcoming series, giving fans an early look at how this new version of the wizarding world will come to life.
Naturally, one of the biggest questions is whether visitors will be able to enjoy a mug of Butterbeer. HBO Max hasn't confirmed that particular detail yet, nor has it revealed the full menu or announced which surprises are planned. There may be plenty more to look forward to, but we'll have to wait for the organizers to reveal their secrets. Apparently, some things are still being kept under a rather large wizarding hat.

Rather than taking place at the city's famous Marienplatz, the Harry Potter Christmas market will be held on Praterinsel, a historic island nestled between two branches of the Isar River. It's an interesting choice for an event like this, with its former industrial buildings, atmospheric courtyards, and location within walking distance of Munich's historic center.
The island has quite a history of its own. According to Munich Tourism, it was once used as a vegetable garden by Franciscan monks before becoming home to a popular inn and, later, a liqueur and vinegar factory. Today, the restored buildings host exhibitions, celebrations, and cultural events. For nine days this winter, they'll be welcoming an entirely different kind of visitor.
One of the best things about this event is that visitors won't have to choose between Hogwarts and a traditional German Christmas market. Munich's historic Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz runs from November 20 through December 24, 2026, meaning both markets will be open during the Harry Potter celebration.
And if you're traveling all the way from the United States, we'd certainly recommend experiencing both. Marienplatz is home to Munich's famous Christmas tree, surrounded by traditional wooden market stalls and the magnificent Gothic Revival New Town Hall. You'll find handmade ornaments, festive decorations, regional specialties, and enough Christmas atmosphere to make even the most dedicated Muggle feel a little enchanted.
There's also plenty to explore beyond the main square. Munich has neighborhood Christmas markets, festive shopping streets, and beautifully decorated squares throughout the city. The official Munich Christmas market guide includes a full list of locations and dates, making it easy to plan several stops.

Admission to the Harry Potter Christmas market is completely free, and HBO Max has confirmed that visitors can attend without purchasing tickets or making a reservation. That makes it a particularly easy addition to a Munich Christmas itinerary, although we'd still recommend planning ahead. It's the first event of its kind, it's only running for nine days, and there are likely to be plenty of fans who want to experience it.
The market will take place on Praterinsel in central Munich. Visitors can reach the island using public transportation, with the Isartor S-Bahn and Lehel U-Bahn stations providing convenient connections to the surrounding area. Exact daily operating hours have not yet been announced, so it's worth checking for updates before your visit.
Dates: Saturday, November 28, through Sunday, December 6, 2026.
Tickets: No tickets, reservations, or advance bookings are required.
Opening hours: Daily operating times have not yet been confirmed.
Location: Praterinsel, 80538 Munich, Germany.
Getting there: Public transportation is recommended, particularly during the busy Christmas market season.
For American travelers: Munich Airport (MUC) is the city's main international airport.
Where to stay: The Altstadt and Lehel neighborhoods are convenient choices for combining both Christmas markets.
Plan ahead: Leave some flexibility in your itinerary in case of crowds or waiting times.

Munich has long been a wonderful destination for Christmas market lovers, but this year's Harry Potter celebration offers something particularly special for fans of the books and films. Whether you're planning a family trip, traveling with fellow Potterheads, or simply looking for an unusual addition to a European Christmas vacation, the combination of Hogwarts-inspired festivities and traditional Bavarian Christmas markets is certainly appealing.
And with free admission, there's really no reason not to add it to your itinerary if you're already visiting Munich. Just remember that the magic only lasts nine days, so make sure your travel dates line up before you start packing your Hogwarts scarf!
