Santorini is Setting a Cap on Visitors Starting 2025 🇬🇷 📰

Santorini, with its iconic blue and white domes, has become a hotspot for cruise tourists and Instagram enthusiasts. But the surge in tourism is putting a strain on the island, leading authorities to impose new restrictions. Here’s everything you need to know about this growing issue and how it might affect your next trip. ⬇️

The island of Santorini, renowned for its breathtaking views and spectacular sunsets, has become a symbol of Greece on Instagram. However, the rise in mass tourism is creating serious sustainability challenges. In 2023, the island hosted 3.4 million tourists and saw 800 cruise ships dock, all for a population of just 15,500 residents—making it one of the most overtouristed places in the world. This influx is overwhelming local infrastructure and leading to long lines just to snap a photo.

To address this situation, Mayor Nikos Zorzos has announced that starting in 2025, a daily limit of 8,000 cruise passengers will be enforced. This decision aims to protect the unique volcanic landscape and preserve the quality of life for residents. Additionally, no new accommodations will be approved, whether in large hotels or through Airbnb rentals.

The narrow streets of the village of Oia, often congested, now see lines of up to 20 minutes just for a single photo. Even the popular “Greek goddess” photo shoots, featuring flowing dresses and costing between €270 and €370 (roughly $290 to $400), are becoming more common. This tourist pressure isn’t just about photos; the environment is also suffering, with cruise ship pollution leaving visible marks on the caldera.

Some locals, like tour guide Kostas Sakavaras, observe that many tourists lack awareness of local culture, often confusing Santorini with nearby destinations like Turkey. Instagram has changed how people choose their vacations, focusing on the perfect selfie to share but without fostering genuine interest in the local culture and traditions. This trend risks creating a “hollow” form of tourism that’s disconnected from the essence of the place.
