Italy will launch a limited-edition night train from Rome to Munich this December, perfectly timed for the Christmas market season. The festive service includes cozy sleeper cabins, dining, and Christmas-themed touches for a relaxed journey through the Alps.
This December, Italy is bringing a new sparkle to winter travel with the Espresso Monaco, a Christmas-themed night train that connects Rome and Munich, home to one of Europe’s most iconic Christmas markets.
The train will run on two weekends only, departing Rome on December 5th and 12th and returning December 7th and 14th, 2025. Operated by FS Treni Turistici Italiani, the journey blends old-fashioned charm with holiday cheer.
Passengers can enjoy a bar and restaurant car, festive decorations and music, and even a small gift to start the trip off in the Christmas spirit. Overnight options include private sleeper cabins and shared couchettes with 4 or 6 berths.
The Espresso Monaco leaves Roma Termini at 7:57 PM, heading north through Verona, Trento, Bolzano, Bressanone, and Brennero before crossing into Austria and arriving in Munich at 1:00 PM the next day.
As the Italian countryside gives way to alpine peaks, passengers can relax with warm drinks, good food, and a front-row view of the winter landscape. When morning arrives, so does the magic: Munich’s Christmas markets, where you can wander between glowing stalls filled with ornaments, gingerbread, and steaming mugs of glühwein.
Tickets can be booked through the FS Treni Turistici Italiani website or the Railbook Portal.
For travelers who prefer to stay within Italy, the same operator also runs a Christmas Market Train to Arezzo, offering a festive Tuscan alternative.
