In 2021, Sybille Morch founded My Disabled Hairy Friends (MDHF) in Koh Samui to provide a safe and loving refuge for dogs with physical disabilities. As a former Doctor in Germany, Sybille has transferred her passion and expertise to providing specialized care to these animals, which include paraplegics, blind dogs, and dogs with neurological deficits. At MDHF, the dogs not only have somewhere safe to stay, but a place of love and companionship, it's super cute!
Sybille's story
During an interview, Sybille explained that her commitment to helping street dogs began in 2011, during a vacation in Samui: "I started to notice how many dogs were wandering the streets without care, and I wanted to do something."
After two years of voluntary work with animals, she decided to leave her full-time job in Germany to move to Samui, dedicating up to eight months a year to caring for these dogs, leading to the formation of the MDHF in 2021.
With her medical expertise, Sybille develops customized treatment plans for each disabled dog, including physical therapy and water aerobics—we can only imagine how fun this is.
Speaking about the challenges, Sybille stressed that her job is a constant commitment: "Running MDHF is a 24/7 job. But I'm not complaining; every second is dedicated to my dogs, and I couldn't do anything else."
The emotion of caring for these dogs is palpable in every word Sybille says: "Each dog has its own personality. Bobbles is the 'big handsome boss', Sophia is the 'diva', while Samy, one of my most difficult cases, managed to walk again against all medical odds after a complete neurological collapse. It was a tough battle, but it was worth it."
Samy is a perfect example of the resilience Sybille admires in her animals: "He fought so hard to walk again, and it was my mission to help him along the way. He taught me to never give up, even when the odds seem impossible."
But her passion doesn't stop there. Sybille firmly believes that disabled dogs teach important life lessons: "These animals show you every day how resilient they are, and how love and care can make a difference. Compassion is the greatest gift a human can have, and showing empathy towards the weakest will always make the world a better place."
Although the work is demanding, Sybille also maintains her role as a medical consultant at a clinic on the island: "I still enjoy being a doctor for people, so I work part-time at a local clinic, but my dogs are my priority."
