The drive from Mexico City to Tolantongo is pretty straightforward. You can rent a car and drive around three-and-a-half hours north. Or you can travel with a tour company like Turitour and do full-day tour by bus for around $899 MXN or around $56 USD.
We found an automatic car rental for the duration of the trip for $29 in total! We recommend always doing further research on the car company you choose to use. It also should be noted that the road near Tolantongo is said to be filled with lots of twists and turns.
Step Three: Book Your Accommodation

Our recommendation of a great hotel to stay in would be Apartahotel Villa Del Sol which is located roughly an hour's drive from Grutas Tolantongo. It's nearly impossible to book a hotel right in Grutas Tolantongo. The hotels do not offer advanced booking and require guests to queue in line the day off to reserve a spot. The closest area with accommodations would be ixmiquilpan—where Apartahotel Villa Del Sol is located. We found rates during the period of 09/23 - 09/27 from $334 in total, or $167 per person.
