Turns out, just like humans, sloths also need to go into retirement too!
Folly Farm found in Pembrokeshire, Wales has made the decision to take in some sloth OAPs. Instead of taking on young breeding sloths, Folly Farm made the decision to home older sloths which have 'retired' from other zoos.
Details
The first sloth to be homed was a two toed sloth called Tuppee who is now at the grand old age of 24. Tuppee was joined by Lightcap from Bristol Zoo, who is 34. Sloths aren't sociable creatures but are known to get more friendly to each other as they age.
Sloths can live up to 20 years old in the wild but have been known to reach up to 50 years old when held in captivity. Like humans they are known to get joint and muscle problems as they get older. Folly Farm makes sure they're taken care of and given the right amount of vitamins and minerals, including cod liver oil tablets for their joints.
It's important to give these older sloths a retirement home as it means that it can free up other sloth enclosures in zoos across the country, meaning more space for breeding programmes.
