On the northern end lies Kitty Hawk, the site of the Wright Brothers' historic first flight. To the south is Ocracoke, known as a haven for shell collectors, and for its place in pirate history: it was the favorite haunt of the pirate Blackbeard, and the site of his dramatic last battle!
