Nighttime Winter Flights to Iceland, Alaska, or Yellowknife Starting from $235 Round Trip
From $235
Just this past weekend, I flew from Boston to Iceland overnight and was gifted with the spectacular opportunity to view the northern lights when flying over southern Greenland. Though, we were expecting more of a show given the large solar flare that erupted last week, we still were impressed with the sight.
My own experience gave me the inspiration to gather nighttime flight options to different locations where northern lights are highly prevalent. Below, I've compiled a list of some overnight flights that will give you a higher probability of seeing this natural phenomenon, especially with the 2024/2025 winter expected to be the highest aurora borealis activity that we've seen in decades.
*Pirate tip: When flying from the US to Europe (Iceland, Finland, Norway, etc.) opt to snag a window seat on the left side of the plane and try to avoid rows too close to the airplane's wing which has that red flashing light at night.
*Prices quoted in USD
*The below flights land in Yellowknife Between 10 pm & midnight
*The below flights land in Iceland before sunrise at 5 am.
*The below flights land in Fairbanks or Anchorage Between 10 pm & 3 am

Please note the KP index was only a 2.00 when I grabbed this photo.
*Pirate tip: Place your phone between the plane window and the window shade to block out any light from inside the plane. Make sure you have long exposure set on your camera.
