Argentina and Spain will meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Even if you’re not going to the match, expect the tournament to affect travel across the region. JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark are already under heavy pressure, hotels are charging peak rates, and FAA restrictions around the stadium could cause additional flight delays on Sunday. Here’s what travelers need to know.
Argentina and Spain will meet in the World Cup Final on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with kickoff at 3 p.m. ET
France and England will play in the third-place match on Saturday, July 18, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens
Newark Liberty is operating under a reduced flight cap of 72 operations per hour through October 24, 2026, down from more than 80 before the FAA order
JFK and LaGuardia are also under FAA capacity orders that have been extended through October 2026
FAA airspace restrictions around MetLife Stadium may affect flights into and out of Newark and Teterboro during the match
Hotel rates are running well above normal summer levels in Manhattan and around the New Jersey Meadowlands, with limited availability near public transit
NJ Transit offers direct rail service to MetLife Stadium from Penn Station via the Meadowlands line
Newark Airport is only about eight miles from MetLife Stadium, but traffic on Final day will make travel times unpredictable
New York and New Jersey’s airports are facing an unusually intense week. Fans are arriving from around the world for a World Cup Final expected to draw unprecedented global interest for a sporting event held in the United States. At the same time, JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark are each operating under separate FAA capacity restrictions, putting even more pressure on the region’s air travel system.
Newark Liberty has been capped at 72 flight operations per hour since an FAA order that cites staffing shortages and aging infrastructure. The cap is in place through October 24, 2026, and while it has reduced delays at Newark significantly compared to the pre-cap period, it also means the airport is running at reduced throughput heading into the busiest travel weekend of the summer. JFK and LaGuardia have their own extended capacity orders in place. The FAA is approximately 3,000 air traffic controllers below its staffing target nationally, with the New York region among the most strained facilities in the country.
On match day, July 19, the FAA will implement airspace restrictions around MetLife Stadium during the event. Flights operating into and out of Newark and Teterboro will be affected by these restrictions during match hours, with ground holds and rerouting possible. Sunday morning is your best window for departures before restrictions take effect. Afternoon and evening departures are the highest-risk time slots.
The NJ Transit rail system is the only sensible option for match day travel to MetLife Stadium. Direct train service runs from Penn Station in Manhattan via the Meadowlands line, with journey times of roughly 35 minutes. On match days, NJ Transit runs enhanced service with additional trains before kickoff and extended service after the match. Tickets should be purchased in advance rather than at the station, where queues will be significant.
Driving from Manhattan to the Meadowlands on Final day is not a plan. Traffic on the turnpike and surrounding routes will back up hours before kickoff and remain congested well after full time. If you're staying in New Jersey and driving to the stadium, parking lots fill fast and are priced accordingly. Rideshare surge pricing around MetLife on a World Cup Final afternoon will be severe. Budget extra time in every direction.
If you're coming from Newark Airport, there's a rail connection to Penn Station in Newark, then a transfer to NJ Transit's Meadowlands service. The total journey is manageable in terms of time, not manageable if you arrive at Newark on a flight delayed by the FAA airspace restrictions and immediately need to catch a train. Build in buffer time, or arrive the night before.
Manhattan hotel availability for this weekend was significantly reduced weeks ago. If you haven't booked, the remaining inventory is expensive, limited, and concentrated further from transit hubs than you'd like. Jersey City, which offers PATH train access to Manhattan and reasonable road access to the stadium, has better remaining availability than midtown Manhattan. Hoboken is similarly connected.
Midweek pricing in the New York area will begin to normalize from Monday, July 20 onward, once the tournament concludes. If your travel this week is not related to the Final, positioning your arrival and departure around the match day itself is the most effective way to avoid the pricing peak and the airport congestion.
For Final ticketholders, the official Face-Value Ticket Exchange still has limited inventory on FIFA's own resale platform. Third-party resale has face values starting around $420 and rising sharply into premium territory.
Spain and Argentina will meet in the World Cup Final after winning their respective semifinals. Spain defeated France 2–0 in Dallas on Tuesday, while Argentina beat England 2–1 in Atlanta on Wednesday. The match is expected to be one of the most-watched sporting events in television history, with a global audience estimated between 1.5 and 2 billion viewers. MetLife Stadium, known during the tournament as New York New Jersey Stadium, seats up to 82,500 in its Final configuration. The venue has hosted more World Cup matches than any other stadium in this tournament, closing with the biggest one.
For those watching from New York rather than attending, virtually every sports bar in Manhattan is booked out for the Final. Reservations were snapped up weeks ago. Arriving early, finding a non-reservation venue, or organizing something at a hotel bar with a screen is the current practical strategy. With Argentina and Spain now confirmed for the Final, expect large groups of supporters to gather throughout the city well before kickoff.
Argentina and Spain will play at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, July 19, with kickoff at 3 p.m. ET. The venue is called New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament.
France and England will play in the third-place match on Saturday, July 18, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Take NJ Transit rail from Penn Station in Manhattan via the Meadowlands line, approximately 35 minutes. On match days NJ Transit runs enhanced service. Buy tickets in advance. Do not drive.
Yes. The FAA implements airspace restrictions around the stadium during major events. Flights into and out of Newark and Teterboro will be affected during match hours. If you're flying out of Newark on Sunday afternoon or evening, build in extra time.
The FAA has maintained a reduced operations cap at Newark Liberty of 72 flights per hour through October 24, 2026, citing staffing shortages and aging infrastructure. This is separate from any World Cup-related restrictions.
Jersey City and Hoboken offer PATH and NJ Transit connections and have more availability than central Manhattan this week. The Meadowlands area has limited hotel inventory directly adjacent to the stadium.
Limited inventory remains on FIFA's official Face-Value Ticket Exchange at tickets.fifa.com. Third-party resale is available but expensive.
