Trentino, located in northeast Italy between Lake Garda and the Dolomites, is offering up to €100,000 (roughly $107.5K) to anyone willing to move to one of its 33 most authentic towns—places where time seems to stand still.
Trentino is getting ready to welcome new residents to some of its quietest villages. This isn’t just a picture-perfect dream—it’s a real opportunity for anyone looking to slow down, change their lifestyle, and invest in something more sustainable.
The Province of Trento has launched a bold new plan to fight depopulation in its mountain towns: grants of up to €100,000 ($107.5K) for those who buy and renovate a home in one of 33 selected villages.
“We’re not asking for income statements. We’re looking for active citizens who want to help build a new community,” says Ileana Olivo, head of the territorial renewal team.
The incentive is designed to attract new residents and has two main parts:
Up to €80,000 (~$87,000) for renovation work (covering 40% of eligible costs in historic centers and 35% in other areas, up to a max of €200,000 (~$218,000)).
Up to €20,000 (~$22,000) toward buying the property, if you don’t already own it.
Total potential grant: €100,000 (~$107,500) — no payback required.
The only condition? You must live in the home full-time for at least 10 years, or rent it out at an affordable rate to someone who moves their residence there.
Anyone can apply — even if you live abroad — as long as you’re not already living in the town where the property is (unless you’re under 45).
You can apply for up to three housing units, as long as they’re part of the same renovation project (for example, an entire building being restored).
🚨Important: You need to already have a specific property in mind before applying.
The towns were chosen based on population decline and their tourism potential. Some of the villages already listed include:
Val di Non: Bresimo, Livo
Val di Sole: Rabbi
Giudicarie: Bondone, Borgo Chiese
Primiero: Sagron Mis, Canal San Bovo, Mezzano
Alpe Cimbra: Luserna
Valsugana: Castello Tesino, Cinte Tesino, Grigno
Val di Cembra: Sover, Giovo
Val di Fiemme and Fassa: Valfloriana, Campitello di Fassa (still being confirmed)
Vallagarina: Terragnolo
These are places far from mass tourism, rich in history, surrounded by nature, and full of small communities ready for a fresh start.
The final program will be approved by spring 2025. Applications will be accepted in rounds of 3–4 months to keep the process manageable and transparent. Once your request is submitted, the funding is expected to be released within about 60 days.
If you act quickly, renovation work could begin as early as September 2025.
With an initial budget of €10 million (~$10.9 million), the Province plans to support around 100 new households. The goal is clear: bring existing buildings back to life, rebuild community, and save these mountain villages.
If you’ve been dreaming of a fresh start in the mountains—surrounded by peace, old forests, and real community—this could be your chance. And it’s backed by a solid, well-planned initiative.
