  • Tsunami Alerts for Hawaii & U.S. West Coast After Massive Quake

🚨 Tsunami Alerts for Hawaii & the U.S. West Coast 🚨

A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 29, triggering tsunami alerts across the Pacific. Both Hawaii and parts of the U.S. West Coast are now under warning or advisory.

What’s Happening in Hawaii?

Tsunami waves already reached Honolulu and Kauai, rising nearly 3 feet above normal in some areas.

Ports and beaches were quickly shut down, flights were paused, and emergency shelters opened. Officials are urging people to stay off the coast and move to higher ground if they’re in a low-lying area.

And just a reminder: the first wave isn’t always the biggest. Conditions can shift quickly.

Mainland U.S. on Alert

Warnings are also in effect from Northern California through Oregon, Washington, and parts of Alaska.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • San Francisco could see waves around 12:40 a.m.

  • Los Angeles area closer to 1:00 a.m.

  • Coastal Oregon and Washington just before midnight

Waves might stay under a foot in most places, but spots like Port San Luis could see surges up to 3 feet. Even smaller waves can cause strong, dangerous currents.

This is one of the strongest earthquakes recorded anywhere in recent years. Several big aftershocks have already followed, some over magnitude 7.5.

Experts say the tsunami threat could last several hours, and more waves are still possible.

TL;DR

  • A massive earthquake near Russia triggered tsunami alerts for Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast.

  • Hawaii has already seen up to 3 feet of sea-level rise, with evacuations underway.

  • California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska remain on alert, with waves expected overnight.

  • Stay off the coast, follow local updates, and don’t assume it’s over just because the first wave passed.
