Farewell to Free Bags: Southwest Says Bon Voyage to Its Signature Perk 💼

Southwest’s most iconic perk has officially been grounded. As of today, passengers will pay to check bags for the first time in decades.

Now Boarding...Baggage Fees

Well, it finally happened. It’s time to say goodbye to one of the last true airline freebies. Starting today, May 29, 2025, Southwest Airlines will begin charging $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second—officially ending its long-standing “Bags Fly Free” policy. Yes, the slogan they literally trademarked.

For years, Southwest set itself apart by letting passengers check two bags at no extra cost. But from now on, unless you’re flying Business Select, hold A-List Preferred status, or swipe a Southwest credit card, your luggage will come with a price tag.

The airline says the change is part of a broader strategy to boost revenue. Also launching today? A new basic fare tier with fewer perks, and assigned seating is on the way later this year—meaning the iconic open boarding system is headed for retirement, too.

While Southwest made $83 million from bag fees last year (compared to billions at United and Delta), the potential windfall is huge. But the shift comes with a risk—Southwest’s famously loyal flyers may start to look elsewhere.

If you're flying with Southwest in the upcoming future, consider this your reminder to add “checked bag fee” to your travel budget. "Bags fly free" is now a thing of the past. Sadly.
