If a trip to Germany or Austria isn't in the cards this year, you can still get most of the feeling without the flight. Picture wooden stalls strung with lights, the smell of bratwurst and cinnamon drifting through the cold air, and a slow December walk that makes everything feel a little softer. These seven markets bring that Christkindlmarkt spirit to US city squares, riverfront parks, and mountain towns. They're easy to reach, easy to love, and very good at talking you into an extra ornament.
Seven markets span Illinois, Pennsylvania, Washington, Indiana, Utah, and Texas, all modeled on German Christkindlmarkt tradition.
Carmel and Bethlehem have confirmed 2026 dates, both running from mid to late November through December.
Most markets are free to enter; some charge for extras like ice skating or special preview nights.
Leavenworth's lights stay lit nightly through the end of February 2027, long after the festivities wrap.
Bethlehem runs weekends only, spread across six long weekends instead of a continuous run.
Carmel closes early anytime temperatures drop to 20°F or lower, so dress for the cold and check ahead.
Chicago's 2026 dates were not yet posted at publication; expect late November through Christmas Eve based on past years.
WHEN: November 21 – December 27, 2026
LOVE Park and City Hall turn into a festive open-air market with raclette melting onto bread, gingerbread hearts hanging by ribbon, and a mix of European imports and local makers. The 30-foot German Glühwein Pyramid, a new centerpiece debuted in 2025, returns as the market's signature photo spot. As evening comes, the lights reflect off the buildings and the nearby rink starts to fill.
Take a lap on the ice, warm up with Glühwein or cocoa, and head back for the ornament you kept thinking about. The Made in Philadelphia Holiday Market at Dilworth Park, just steps away, is worth a stop too if you want to shop local alongside the German imports.
WHEN: November 27 – December 24, 2026, for the main festivities. The lights themselves stay on daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. through the end of February 2027.
Leavenworth is a Bavarian-style town that takes the holidays seriously, with more than half a million lights and weekends full of choirs, alphorns, and Santa appearances. Shops focus on ornaments and sweets, while the Cascade Mountains deliver postcard views any day of the week. The best window for photos falls around 4:30 to 6 p.m., when alpenglow on the peaks fades into the lit-up streetscape below.
December feels lively and festive. January and February are quieter, colder, and often snowier, which is its own kind of magic if you don't mind the crowds thinning out.
WHEN: November 21 – December 24, 2026 (closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day)
Carmel's Christkindlmarkt has become a Midwest favorite, and it's grown since it first opened, with 50 authentic German food and artisan huts and a brand-new free shuttle service added in 2025. Artisans demonstrate woodcarving and glasswork throughout the season, and food is a highlight: käse-spätzle, raclette, candied nuts, and strudel make it hard to stop at just one snack. A 21-and-over preview night called Wundernacht runs November 19, with tickets released later in the year.
The market closes anytime temperatures hit 20°F or lower, so check conditions before you head out on the coldest days. Skating at Carter Green, followed by a warm dinner, still makes for an evening that feels complete.
WHEN: Christkindlmarkt SLC typically runs a compact multi-day stretch in early December at This Is The Place Heritage Park. Exact 2026 dates had not been posted at the time of writing; check christkindlmarkt-slc.com closer to the season.
Set inside This Is The Place Heritage Park, this market layers classic stalls with traditions that make it feel personal: lantern walks, a St. Martin's Lantern Parade, visits from St. Nikolaus, choirs on stage, and a Gnome Fest that keeps kids entertained. Families love the hands-on activities, and anyone with a sweet tooth will find a new favorite within five minutes.
Arrive near opening for easy parking and a relaxed first lap around the roughly 90 vendor booths.
WHEN: November 12–14, November 19–21, November 26–28, December 2–5, December 9–12, and December 16–19, 2026
"Christmas City USA" goes all in with heated tents at SteelStacks and a focus on quality you can see, from glass-blowing and woodwork to textiles and a wide selection of German ornaments and nutcrackers from Käthe Wohlfahrt. This is the market's 34th year, and it runs across six long weekends rather than a continuous stretch, so plan around the specific dates rather than assuming it's open daily. Live music adds to the atmosphere, and the spacious campus makes it easy to take your time.
If you're shopping with purpose, this is the place to find the piece you'll unwrap every December for years to come.
WHEN: November 20–23 and November 27 – December 23, 2026
Arlington brings German tradition to the North Plaza outside Globe Life Field, marking its 16th year and the nearly 70-year sister-city relationship between Arlington and Bad Königshofen. Expect Käthe Wohlfahrt ornaments, carved smokers, hearty food, and live performances that keep the mood festive. The market runs in two blocks, so you can make an early visit in late November and come back closer to Christmas for another round.
Expect a friendly crowd, plenty of photo ops, and the kind of backdrop that feels right for a December evening in Texas.
WHEN: Official 2026 dates had not been announced at the time of writing. Based on the market's typical pattern, expect Daley Plaza to run from roughly November 20 through December 24, 2026, with Aurora and Wrigleyville following similar windows. Check christkindlmarket.com closer to the season for confirmed dates and hours.
Daley Plaza is the classic scene: rows of wooden stalls, live music, imported ornaments, and the souvenir mug that quietly turns everyone into a collector by mid-December. Aurora’s riverfront setup is spacious and family friendly, with plenty of room to wander, while Wrigleyville adds rink-side energy at Gallagher Way and often keeps the lights on a little longer into the season. Food is half the fun. Nürnberger brats, potato pancakes, strudel are sold, making it feel like a real European Christmas market.
If you can, visit on a weekday. Saturday evenings tend to be the busiest time at popular markets, while weekday afternoons give you more room to browse and shorter food lines.
Stay until after dark. Christmas markets are lovely during the day, but the lights are doing a considerable amount of the heavy lifting here.
Bring layers, comfortable shoes, and gloves you can actually use your phone in. Arrive hungry. And learn three important words before you go:
Glühwein: hot mulled wine
Lebkuchen: German gingerbread
Stollen: traditional German Christmas bread
Choose one small splurge. An ornament, a mug, a ridiculous amount of cheese, whatever speaks to you. That's basically Christmas-market economics.
You don’t need a flight to Germany to get a taste of the Christmas-market magic. From Chicago’s German-inspired stalls to Leavenworth’s twinkling Bavarian-style streets and Bethlehem’s festive SteelStacks setting, these US Christmas markets deliver plenty of Glühwein, handmade gifts, holiday lights, and excuse-worthy seasonal snacks.
So grab your warmest coat, arrive hungry, and leave a little room in your suitcase for an ornament you definitely didn’t plan on buying. Europe may have started the tradition, but you can find plenty of Christmas-market magic right here at home.
Some of the best European-style Christmas markets and holiday villages in the US include Christkindlmarket in Chicago, Christmas Village in Philadelphia, Village of Lights in Leavenworth, Carmel Christkindlmarkt, Christkindlmarkt SLC, Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem, and the Texas Christkindl Market in Arlington.
Carmel Christkindlmarkt puts a particularly strong emphasis on German food, goods, artisans, and cultural traditions. Chicago's Christkindlmarket is another famous German-style option, while Leavenworth offers the broader experience of staying in an entire Bavarian-themed mountain town.
Many are. Philadelphia, Carmel, Salt Lake City, Leavenworth's Village of Lights, and the Texas Christkindl Market offer free admission in 2026. Bethlehem generally requires a ticket, although it offers free admission on Fridays from 5–8 PM. Chicago's 2026 details have not yet been announced.
Most major US Christmas markets open in mid-to-late November and run through Christmas Eve or shortly afterward. In 2026, Bethlehem begins Nov. 13, Arlington begins Nov. 20, and Philadelphia and Carmel open Nov. 21.
Philadelphia's Christmas Village runs through Dec. 27, 2026. Leavenworth's main Christmastown festivities finish on Christmas Eve, but its more than half a million lights remain illuminated through Feb. 28, 2027.
Yes. Several are especially family-friendly. Carmel has its Kinderecke and Spielhaus, Philadelphia offers rides and Santa visits, Leavenworth has children's activities and Santa appearances, and Salt Lake City's program traditionally centers heavily on family activities and cultural experiences.
Look for bratwurst, pretzels, potato pancakes, raclette or other melted-cheese dishes, roasted nuts, strudel, Lebkuchen, Stollen, and Glühwein. Exact menus vary by market and vendor.
Glühwein is warm, spiced mulled wine traditionally associated with Christmas markets in Germany and other parts of Central Europe. Non-alcoholic hot drinks are usually available too.
For fewer crowds, try a weekday or arrive near opening. For the best atmosphere, stay until after sunset when the lights come on. Weekend evenings usually have the liveliest atmosphere but also the biggest crowds.
It depends on the market. Many vendors accept cards, but payment policies vary. Bethlehem is notably cashless for admission, ArtsQuest food and beverages, and official merchandise in 2026, although participating artisans may accept cash.
Policies vary. Outdoor Christmas markets often continue through ordinary winter weather, but severe conditions can cause early closures or cancellations. Check the market's official website or social channels on the day of your visit if the forecast looks rough.
