Renting an Airbnb is a popular alternative to hotels in European cities. However, in Barcelona, the abundance of vacation rentals is causing a severe housing shortage for locals. In response, the city plans to ban short-term apartment rentals for tourists by the end of 2028.
This move is expected to release 10,000 apartments back into the long-term housing market, providing much-needed homes for residents. According to the mayor of Barcelona, rental prices have skyrocketed by nearly 70%, and home purchase prices by about 40% in the past decade. Additionally, approximately 6,000 apartments are being rented out illegally.
To combat this housing crisis and ensure affordable living options, the city administration sees this ban as a necessary action. By regulating the rental market, Barcelona aims to create a more sustainable and affordable environment for its residents.
