A Guide to the Total Solar Eclipse, from Someone in its Path🤩 🌘

I was born and raised in Northern New Hampshire and call this region of the US my home. It's predicted that a total solar eclipse will traverse this area on April 8, making it the perfect place to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. I've compiled a list of things to do, how to get here, recommendations on an unforgettable place to stay, and most importantly, the best places to view the eclipse.

How to Get to Northern New Hampshire

The closest airports to Northern New Hampshire would be Manchester-Boston Regional Airport which is roughly a 3 hr drive south, or Portland International Jetport which is roughly 2 and a half hours away in Portland, Maine. Alternatively, you can even fly into Boston Logan Airport and grab a bus up to Northern New Hampshire. However, I recommend renting a car above all else, as public transport and even ubers/taxis are close to non existent in northern New Hamphsire.

Getting Around

Like mentioned above, you're definitely going to want to opt for a rental car to fully enjoy the region, as public transport and even ubers/taxis are nearly non existent.

Best Car Rental Deals

*Please note that weather in Northern New Hampshire can be quite unpredictable and you are likely to pass through mountainous regions, or areas where moose are present. So be cautious on the roads!

Bus Options

Alternatively, you can take a look at Concord Coachlines for buses that run from Southern New Hampshire, Portland, or even Boston Logan Airport and bring you to north.

Where to Stay

Recond numbers are expected to visit this region with over 60k expected visitors. The communities in Northern New Hampshire cannot support these numbers of visitors. We recommend staying a bit further south for better likelihood of finding a place to stay. Conway and North Conway, New Hampshire are a touristy region just below the total solar eclipse band that would have more availability during this period.

Most Affordable Stay

The Golden Gables Inn is located near North Conway, New Hampshire and has fantastic rates still from just $95 a night.

Bucket-List Stay

Looking for a truly unique stay and willing to pay a bit more? You should definitely check out Adventure Suites in Conway, New Hampshire. They offer super cool and unique themed-rooms. Also, this is a personal favorite, as my brother-in-law works here. Prices surrounding these peak April dates can be a bit expensive. Maybe opt to stay one night, we found rates on the night of April 8th for as low as $239.

Where to View the Total Solar Eclipse

Arguably the most important part of the trip, would be finding the perfect spot to view the Total Solar Eclipse. As mentioned earlier in the article, you're going to want to move even more north. I grew up in a small town of Errol, New Hampshire, and I can confidently say, there are many breathtaking nature spots surrounding my hometown. My top pick, which I'm expecting to be a popular spot among locals and tourists, alike, would be Table Rock in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire.
