Last December, my resident Kevin McCallister superfan asked if you can actually stay at The Plaza. The answer was yes. The answer is still yes… but not for long.
The Plaza Hotel is closing in January 2027 for at least four years to restore its landmark facade. That makes this holiday season your last chance to live like Kevin for a while. So, with that in mind, we redid the Home Alone math for 2026, and Mr. McCallister may want to sit down.
The Plaza Hotel will close in January 2027 for at least four years to restore its landmark-protected facade.
The closure includes the hotel's 282 guest rooms, its event spaces, and the Palm Court.
The Plaza is expected to reopen in 2031 at the earliest, with no firm date announced.
The Plaza's Home Alone: Fun in New York package includes a four-hour private limousine ride, a large cheese pizza, and a 16-scoop ice cream sundae.
December rates at The Plaza are currently showing at $4,514 a night, nearly double last year's $2,311.
November rates at The Plaza start from about $1,778 a night with member pricing.
Kevin's $967 room service bill from 1992 is worth about $2,322 in today's dollars.
The Plaza's lobby trees go up November 11, making this the last holiday season to see them for years.
t's official. The Plaza announced on October 14 that it will close in January 2027 for at least four years while crews repair and restore its landmark-protected facade. The hotel hasn't named an exact closing date yet, but the closure covers all 282 guest rooms, the event spaces, and the Palm Court, home of the famous afternoon tea.
That puts a reopening in 2031 at the earliest. If you've ever wanted to walk into that lobby and ask for a room (no Talkboy required), this is your window. Good news for the people who make the magic happen: the hotel's union workers will have the right to return to their jobs at the same pay when it reopens.
This isn't The Plaza's first long closure, either. The hotel closed in 2005 for a renovation that turned many of its rooms into private residences, then reopened in 2008.
The Plaza's Grand Ballroom and other event spaces will also close in January 2027.
Kevin had it all figured out: a suite, a limo, a cheese pizza, and enough room service to make a grown man cry. The Plaza still lets you recreate it with its Home Alone: Fun in New York package, which includes:
A four-hour private limousine ride past filming locations like the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Carnegie Hall, and Radio City Music Hall.
A large cheese pizza for the ride (obviously).
A 16-scoop ice cream sundae delivered to your room. Two scoops? Make it sixteen. You're not driving.
The best part: the limo ride is included in the package price, so there's no separate limo bill. Rates vary by room type, and the package has to be booked directly with The Plaza at least three days before check-in, since it isn't available on third-party booking sites. Heads up: the limo ride isn't a guided tour, and the limo color may vary.
The Home Alone package still has availability in November, but December dates are already sold out.

Want to snag one of the last December dates instead? Since the Home Alone package is no longer available in December, you'll need to book the limo separately. The NYC: Private Home Alone 2 Stretch Limousine Tour with Pizza on GetYourGuide costs $959 per group of up to seven, with taxes and fees included. It's rated 4.6 stars from 111 reviews, and you can cancel for free up to 24 hours ahead. It's also the way to go if The Plaza isn't in the budget at all.
Kevin rode alone, and you can too. But since the price covers up to seven passengers, bringing the whole crew works out to about $137 each for a group of seven. Way cheaper than flying to New York by accident.
The private Home Alone 2 limo tour costs $959 for up to seven passengers on GetYourGuide.
Then there's room service. Kevin's bill in 1992 came to $967, and according to an inflation calculator, that's worth about $2,322 today. Prices have climbed about 131% since Kevin charged it all to his dad's credit card. That's a lot of sundaes.
Kevin's $967 room service order would cost about $2,322 in today's money.
Last year, I worked out that recreating Kevin's trip would cost about $7,814. This year? Grab a chair.
In the movie, Kevin stays three nights, but Mr. McCallister only pays for two. We're still assuming night three was comped once the hotel realized it let a kid check in alone and run up a room service tab. Here's the 2026 math:
2 nights at The Plaza in December: $9,028 ($4,514 a night)
Home Alone limo tour and pizza: $959 (booked separately, since the package isn't available in December)
Room service ($967 in 1992 money): $2,322
Total: $12,309. That's $4,495 more than last year.
Total: $12,309. That's $4,495 more than last year.
The biggest price increase comes from the room itself. December rates have skyrocketed to $4,514 a night, nearly double last year's $2,311. Maybe everyone wants one last stay before the hotel closes, but either way, that's what a night will cost you in December. Thankfully, Mr. McCallister still isn't covering the toy store shopping spree, the enormous Christmas tree in the suite, or the therapy the hotel staff probably needed afterward.
December rates at The Plaza are currently showing at $4,514 a night.
If this is The Plaza's last holiday season for a while, it's going out in style. Highlights from the hotel's holiday lineup include:
Holiday décor: Seasonal displays and the iconic Plaza Christmas tree debut on November 11.
Tree Lighting Celebration: November 12, open only to registered hotel guests and guests with confirmed dining reservations.
Holiday Afternoon Tea: November 11 to January 12 in the Palm Court, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Thanksgiving Grand Fête: November 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Palm Court.
Suitest Season of All: A suite offer with a 7-foot holiday tree, festive flowers, and a seasonal welcome amenity.
Holiday Spa Escape: A 60-minute facial and 60-minute massage for $395, available in November and December only.
New Year's Eve Grand Fête: December 31 under the Palm Court dome, with live entertainment, a buffet, an open bar, and a Louis Roederer Champagne toast at midnight.
Dining reservations are open now for most holiday events (New Year's Eve opens to non-hotel guests on November 1), so don't wait.
The Suitest Season of All offer adds a 7-foot holiday tree to your Plaza suite.
Last year, the budget move was waiting until January, February, or March. That's off the table this time, since the hotel closes in January. Your best bet is November.
November rates at The Plaza start from about $1,778 a night with member pricing, or $1,860 with free cancellation before November 14. Still a splurge, but it's less than half the December rate. You'll catch the holiday décor, the tree lighting, Holiday Afternoon Tea, and Thanksgiving week in New York, when the 100th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade passes just a few blocks away. Same hotel. Same Central Park views. Way less holiday markup.
November is also when we're seeing open Home Alone package dates, and that package already includes the limo ride, the cheese pizza, and the 16-scoop sundae. Those rates above are for room-only stays through booking sites, though. To get the package, book directly with The Plaza.
November rates at The Plaza start from about $1,778 a night with member pricing.
If staying at The Plaza like Kevin McCallister has ever been on your Christmas wish list, this is the year to make it happen! The hotel closes in January, and it won't reopen until at least 2031. December prices are steep, but November offers a chance to save quite a bit. And if a night at The Plaza is out of your budget, the Home Alone limo tour is a fun way to recreate some of Kevin's New York adventures without the hotel bill.
And if you do get the chance to stay at The Plaza, I have one request. Please ask the front desk Mrs. McCallister's famous question: "What kind of idiots do you have working here?" If someone responds with "The finest in New York," it'll be worth every penny.
Just don't forget to bring some gum for tips.
