Visit some iconic Halloween spots in the Northeastern part of the US. This road trip guide will take you through Salem where the famous witch trials took place, Sleepy Hollow where the Headless Horseman came to life, East Corinth the small Vermont town where a famous Halloween movie was filmed, and the city of Bangor in Maine that's home to the famous author and the dubbed "King of Horror" Stephen King. Follow the suggested itinerary below, or opt to do it in reverse by either starting in New York City or Boston.

Stop #1: Salem, MA

Your Halloween-themed road trip begins in Salem, Massachusetts, a town with a a dark history. Known for the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692, Salem offers a ton of spooky attractions to kick off your adventure. Visit the Salem Witch Museum to learn about the trials and explore the town's many haunted houses and eerie graveyards. Don’t miss the Witch House, the only remaining structure with direct ties to the trials, and the Old Burying Point Cemetery, where many of the accused witches are believed to be buried.

Salem is just 16 miles from Boston and a roughly 30-minute car ride. You can also opt to grab a train from Boston North Station for under $3.

Stop #2: Bangor, ME

From Salem, your next destination is Bangor, Maine, the home of the king of horror, Stephen King. The drive covers around 215 miles and should take about 3 and a half hours via car. The route will take you north through the scenic New England countryside, with its picturesque fall foliage adding to the spooky ambiance.

Stop #3: East Corinth, VT

The drive from Bangor to East Corinth is approximately 230 miles and will take you around 4 hours. As you journey through Maine and into Vermont, the rolling hills and dense forests create an eerie, yet colorful atmosphere perfect for a Halloween road trip.

East Corinth, Vermont, is a quaint and quiet town that became famous as the primary filming location for an iconic Halloween film "he whose name shall not be mentioned three times 🪲🧃", the town offers a quirky, gothic charm like in the cult classic. Fans can explore the areas where scenes were shot, such as the famous red-covered bridge. The surrounding countryside, especially in late October, offers a stunning backdrop of colorful autumn leaves that enhances the spooky vibe.

Stop #4: Sleepy Hollow, NY

From East Corinth, your journey continues to the final stop, Sleepy Hollow, New York. This leg of the trip is about 255 miles and will take approximately 4 and a half hours by car. As you drive through the Green Mountains of Vermont and down into the Hudson Valley of New York, the road winds through some of the most hauntingly beautiful landscapes in the Northeast.

The town of Sleepy Hollow, New York lies on the Hudson River just an hour's drive from New York City (32 miles). Alternatively, if you decide to fly into New York, this is where your journey begins. The 1820s short novel "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", is based on this town. Around Halloween time, there are ghost tours, haunted hayrides, and the opportunity to visit the Old Dutch Church and its cemetery, where the Headless Horseman is said to roam. The town’s annual Halloween celebrations are famous, featuring events like the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, where thousands of hand-carved pumpkins light up the night.

After soaking in the ghostly atmosphere of Sleepy Hollow, you’ve completed your Halloween-themed road trip.
