Somewhere between "Florida Man wrestles alligator" and "Florida Man leads police on electric scooter chase," someone had a genuinely brilliant idea: what if those headlines were sports? The Florida Man Games is an annual athletic event held in Florida that turns the state's most infamous news moments into competitive events, complete with teams, referees, and an actual championship belt. The 2026 edition just wrapped up at the Freedom Factory racetrack in Bradenton, with around 5,000 spectators watching twelve teams out-Florida each other in front of a live crowd. If you missed it, now is the time to start planning for 2027, because this one sells out.
The Florida Man Games were created by Pete Melfi, who runs the Florida media outlet The 904 Now. He says he came up with the events by reverse-engineering years of Florida Man headlines, which is honestly a more respectable creative process than it sounds.

The debut event was held in February 2024 at Francis Field in St. Augustine, drew thousands of spectators, and crowned Team Hanky Spanky as the first champions. The event has grown every year since, moving from St. Augustine to the St. Johns County Fairgrounds, and most recently to the Freedom Factory, a Bradenton-area racetrack owned by YouTube star and stock-car racer Cleetus McFarland.
The Games are team-based, with groups of competitors from across Florida going head-to-head in a full day of events. Teams develop their own personas, names, costumes, and trash talk in the lead-up to competition. Previous team names have included the Cooter Commandos, the Red Eyed Gator Huggers, and the perennial favorites, Hanky Spanky. Being athletic is genuinely not required. What is required, apparently, is a complete disregard for self-preservation and a willingness to be hosed down in a parking lot afterward.

This is where it gets good. The event lineup borrows directly from Florida's headline archive, and the results are exactly as chaotic as you'd expect.
The Evading Arrest Obstacle Course is a fan favorite for a reason. Competitors escape from handcuffs inside a police car, jump fences, throw an inflatable alligator through a window, tip over wooden cows, and retrieve a frozen iguana from a pool of mud, all while being chased by actual sheriff's deputies.

The Grocery Aisle Brawl involves competitors jousting with shopping carts before spending sixty seconds stuffing those carts with as much loot as possible while physically fighting off the other team. A matchup at the 2026 event between the Tampa Trash Pandas and Hanky Spanky reportedly got heated enough that Manatee County sheriff's deputies positioned themselves nearby as a precaution.

New events in 2026 included Bullwhips and Bad Decisions, in which pairs of competitors used actual whips to try to unholster beer cans from each other's belts in a caged octagon, and the Deer Dong Beer Bong, which is exactly what it sounds like and which the event's own website describes as possibly the most disgusting thing they've ever introduced. Blindfolded Taser Tag with cattle prods rounded out the lineup, and if you have questions about what that looks like, there is ample footage on the internet.

The 2026 Games were held on February 21 at the Freedom Factory, where home turf advantage turned out to matter quite a bit. The Freedom Factory's own team, led by Cleetus McFarland himself, took the championship, ending Team Hanky Spanky's two-year winning streak in the process.
The crowd, which topped 5,000 people, arrived in beer costumes, drinking helmets, Burger King hats, and enough pit viper sunglasses to supply a small nation. "It is definitely the redneck Olympics," said one attendee who has made the trip every year.

The 2026 Games are done, but 2027 is already on the horizon, and if this event has a pattern, the next one will be bigger. Here's what you need to know:

Bags follow standard sporting event rules: small or clear bags only. Leave the camping chairs at home, but bleacher seating and tented areas are available throughout the grounds.
The event is ADA accessible, which is a detail that says a lot about how seriously the organizers take the logistics, even when the events themselves involve cattle prods and fake deer urine.

Start watching the official site for 2027 dates, because tickets historically don't last long. The championship belt is waiting, and Florida is ready to defend its honor.
