Pirates, discover insider Margot's experience volunteering in a turtle refuge in Costa Rica! Our favorite part: she saw 452 baby turtles hatch š„°
You did this volunteering in Santa Cruz, Costa Rica. What is your feedback and what led you to volunteer in a turtle conservation center?
I wanted to do something new and learn more about marine biodiversity. I studied sustainable development and Costa Rica is known for having an extraordinary biodiversity. I also wanted to take advantage of my 5-month trip to Costa Rica and try new experiences.
I only remember positive things about it. It was a very tiring experience because of the heat but very enriching both in terms of the meetings and the missions.
What kind of work did you do?
I worked Monday to Friday. When I was on morning or afternoon shift, I worked in an enclosure where the nests with the turtle eggs were. I stayed near the nests in case any babies were born. I also answered questions and educated visitors.
When babies came out of their nest, we had the mission to put them in containers within 2 or 3 hours and take them to the exact spot where the mother had laid her eggs. Then we put them on the sand and let them go into the sea.
In the evening, I would watch the turtle nests to prevent raccoons from eating the eggs. I would also stay near the nests to witness the births and I would make rounds to see if any mother turtles were coming to lay their eggs.
In 2 weeks of volunteering, I saw 452 baby turtles being born and I had the chance to meet a mother turtle during a night patrol.
Can you tell us about the impact that these volunteer experiences had on your personal development, your skills or your professional aspirations?
My volunteering experiences have brought me a lot on a human level. I learned to know my limits and I gained maturity. Traveling and volunteering allows you to take your time and discover new cultures. I am happy and proud of myself for having done that.
Based on your experience, what advice would you give to people who are considering doing this type of volunteering? What are the things to consider and how can they get the most out of their experience?
Absolutely go for it! Now, every time I hesitate, I tell myself āgo for it or youāll regret itā (thatās my mantra) so I advise everyone to do it!
It helps a lot to know how to speak English, and of course to want to share and discover new experiences. Everyone will be friendly with you!
