A Strange Place to Stay in Hawaii
From $110
There are luxurious accommodations or exceptional accommodations, but even we haven't seen anything quite like this yet. On the Hawaiian island Big Island, you can stay on a lava field, in an Airbnb less than 4 miles away from an active volcano!
Phoenix House is the name of the accommodation for adrenaline junkies and adventure seekers at the foot of the Kilauea volcano. The 4091 foot high volcano experienced more than 50 eruptions in the last century. Since January 3rd, 1983, one of its eruptive mouths has been in constant eruption.
Since then, the volcano has attracted countless travelers who come to hike the crater or take photos of the lava flowing into the sea. A vacation on the lava field, on the other hand, sounds surreal, doesn't it? The Phoenix House is visually adapted to the area, and looks a bit drab from the outside. But inside you can expect a cozy and, above all, well-equipped vacation home.
The fact that you are staying on a lava field not far from an active volcano becomes clear when you look out of the window in the bedroom on the upper floor of the house. From there you can see the plumes of smoke rising from where the lava route meets the ocean.
However, if you are looking for peace and quiet on a vacation and want to experience and see something special, the Phoenix House may be the right place for you. An overnight stay for two starts at $110 a night, however, this price point does not include Airbnb taxes and fees. We found a 3-night stay from $581 in total or around $97 per person, per night. You should keep in mind: you don’t have cell phone reception in the Tiny House.
