New Zealand is without a doubt my favorite place in the world. The only problem is that it's a million miles from anywhere, so you need to stay for a longer time to make the journey worth it. Luckily, New Zealand has just announced a more flexible plan for Digital Nomads which allows you to work for 90 days on a visitor's visa without needing to apply for anything special.

The general rules seem to be:

  1. You have to work remotely for a company not based in New Zealand.

  2. You can be self-employeed with clients outside of New Zealand.

  3. To work more than 90 days, you have to start paying taxes.

  4. There is no threshhold for how much you must earn to qualify.

We especially love the last rule because there is so much hiking and adventuring to do in New Zealand that you may want to work just enough to feed and house yourself. It's worth noting as well, that New Zealand has a great van-life culture. If you're looking for a way of living their cheaply, you can buy a van when you arrive and sell it before you leave. Just make sure you have Wi-Fi sorted out so you can get your work done.

New Zealand has introduced these new rules as they want to attract long-term travelers who have more to spend while in the country. It helps to boost local economy and lessens your carbon footprint versus a quick there-and-back-again flight.

Sound like something you're interested in? Go ask your boss for permission to work from New Zealand for three months. If their worried about you getting tasks done on time, remind them that with the timezone, you'll be working from the future.
