Many people say that Hawaii is a substitute for heaven on earth (we agree). In this paradise we found a treehouse in the middle of the rainforest that is built on a sleeping volcano!
Owners regularly report whether there is lava on the volcano's surface and when the cottage can be visited. Often times steam is coming out of the ground (this is a sign of magma emission), but there have been no eruptions or signs of the volcano waking up in recent times. As the owners write on the website: Volcanoes are unpredictable, but they give signs before they wake up. These signs are typically increased seismicity over a period of weeks and months, and sometimes years.
The cottage, charmingly named Mahinui Na Lani, is built among the trees of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It was created as an additional idea for a Balinese-style pavilion, which serves as an intimate wedding venue. This pavilion can also be booked if you are planning a wedding in Hawaii!
The cabin can be accessed by a path in the forest among boulders made of lava. The ascent is a bit steep, but you can order your luggage to be delivered to your accommodation on request.
Mahinui Na Lani is built on two floors connected by a ladder. On the upper floor there is a living room with chairs and an ottoman, a flat screen, a table and stools by the window, a small kitchen, an outdoor shower and an ecological toilet. On the veranda you can relax in the hot tub and eat on the terrace among the trees, where the local birds fly. There is also a queen-size bed in the cottage.
The cottage is made almost entirely of recycled materials. The floors and some parts of the house are made of redwood and cedar that were once used in one of the churches. There are stained glass windows made by a local artist.
In addition to staying in the cottage, it is worth taking advantage of the area that has a lot to offer. There are many hiking paths stretching through the rainforest, desert, volcanic devastation, and even a path with footprints preserved from an eruption more than a century ago. Less than a mile from the cottage is Volcano Village (volcanic village) with restaurants and art galleries and a beautiful black beach.
Surrounded by a rainforest, the tree-bough cottage is invisible from afar. Prices start from $ 269 per night.
