Dreaming of a Bora Bora Vacation? Here’s How to Plan Your Dream Getaway

Do you dream of a vacation in Bora Bora? Why wait? Why not experience the ultimate paradise now? If you’re a bit flexible, have time for a getaway to a distant island paradise, and also have a little money saved up, you can afford a vacation to Bora Bora right now. Find out here what you can admire on Bora Bora, besides the deep blue lagoons, steep mountain slopes, and white sandy beaches full of palm trees.

Practical Information for Traveling to Bora Bora

Getting to Bora Bora

You are surely aware that Bora Bora is not just around the corner. You should plan for about 36 hours of travel time on your trip to Bora Bora. While many tour operators and airlines offer cheap flights to Tahiti and French Polynesia, Bora Bora only has a small airport for domestic flights from the USA. Therefore, you will first need to fly to Papeete-Tahiti Airport, from where you will take a domestic flight to Bora Bora Airport and then a boat to your hotel in Bora Bora. The boat ride will take an additional one to three hours.

Pirate Tip: Try to book a flight to Bora Bora from LAX that brings you during the day, as you’ll get a truly spectacular view of the island.

Entry to Bora Bora

US citizens do not need a visa to enter Bora Bora if staying no longer than 90 days. However, you will need a passport valid for at least six months from the day of entry. A special note for Bora Bora: You must pay a daily stay tax per person. This can be paid locally on the island using most major credit cards. The tax is around $1.75 per person/night.

Best Time to Visit Bora Bora

The best time to visit Bora Bora is between June and September, as it is cooler and drier during this time. April, May, or October are also good months for a vacation in Bora Bora. However, November to March is the best time to not go to Bora Bora, as it is extremely hot and humid at that time.

How Long Should You Stay in Bora Bora?

To get the most out of your Bora Bora vacation and also explore other beautiful parts of the world on your way there and back, we recommend staying for at least 3 weeks, or even better, 4 weeks. This gives you enough time for stopovers, the chance to discover the beautiful surrounding islands, and, of course, to explore the stunning island of Bora Bora and relax on its dream beaches.

Tips and Tricks for a Budget-Friendly Bora Bora Vacation

  • You don’t have to book the fancy overwater bungalows to vacation in Bora Bora, as there are much cheaper Bora Bora accommodations like hostels, camping spots, Couchsurfing, or private rentals.

  • If you still want to enjoy some luxury, you can visit public bars at some resorts and treat yourself to a drink or two. For even more luxury, consider hotels like the InterContinental, which offers a “day pass” so you can feel like a real guest and be pampered.

  • When it comes to food, we’re usually not too keen to save, but the prices in Bora Bora can be high since many goods have to be imported. We recommend mainly purchasing local food (like fruits and fish) and even cooking some meals yourself.

  • The cheapest mode of transportation in Bora Bora is already at your disposal: your feet! You can get around the island quite well and experience a lot on foot. Bicycles are also a cheap option, allowing you to move around a little faster. Don’t miss out on kayaking and enjoying Bora Bora and its overwater bungalows from the sea.

How to Get to Bora Bora on a Budget?

First, it’s important to note that “cheap” is relative. A Bora Bora vacation is never going to be cheap, even with the best vacation deals, so keep that in mind. If you’re really looking to travel on a budget, a weekend getaway to a nearby destination might be more affordable. However, we can reassure you that a trip to Bora Bora doesn’t have to be a luxury vacation at unimaginable prices. Bora Bora can be visited relatively affordably if you:

Be flexible

Flexibility, spontaneity, and simplicity are key for a low-budget vacation. The more flexible you are with your travel dates and duration, and the more spontaneous you are about booking a good flight deal, the cheaper your trip to Bora Bora will be.

Have enough spare change

Despite being flexible, you still can’t get to Bora Bora for pennies. While you can certainly save money on accommodation, Bora Bora flights are still relatively expensive. But if you’re flexible with your travel time and duration, and book LAX to Bora Bora flights non-stop when it’s on sale, you can make your Bora Bora dream come true.

Have time

This might seem obvious, but it’s often underestimated. Bora Bora is not just around the corner: the journey from Los Angeles alone takes at least 11 hours. You’ll also need to account for baggage check-in and more. Since you may need to make stopovers, we recommend using these to explore other beautiful parts of the world.
