The Chupacabra is a popular urban legend that came to life only a mere 24 years ago on the island paradise of Puerto Rico. Since then the tale of the chupacabra spread through South America and quickly jumped to the southern American States, with Texas and New Mexico having the most recorded sightings and body specimens. However, Chupacabra sightings have been reported as far north as Maine!
What Is The Chupacabra?
One morning in 1995 a local farmer went to tend to his sheep and discovered eight of them dead with three puncture holes in each chest. They were completely drained of blood and this is where the tale begins. A few months later an eyewitness claimed to have seen the creature in an area where about 150 farm animals and pets were reportedly killed in the same manner.
The name Chupacabra stems from the Spanish words chupar, “to suck” and cabra, “goat”; together this translates literally to “goat-sucker”. The Chupacabra comes in two main forms. Some people describe the beast as being a type of bi-pedal reptilian creature with greenish-grey scaly skin and sharp quills running down it’s back that stands about three to four feet high, while others describe it as some sort of wild hairless hell hound with large fangs and claws.
In the southern United States there have been many supposed Chupacabras killed by locals and then the bodies were reported to the authorities. However, once the specimens were tested the DNA evidence generally came back as being from wild dogs or coyotes with serious cases of mange, which causes the disfigured look of the animals.
Is The Chupacabra Real?
Probably not. While the unexplained deaths and draining of blood on farm animals is something that remains to be debunked, it’s very unlikely that you or your pets will cross the path with the mythical Chupacabra. It’s more likely that you’ll enjoy yourself on a relaxing beach vacation in Puerto Rico or horseback riding in Texas, sans Chupacabra sightings.
