The Colosseum – Italy

Where To Fly Into: Rome, Italy
When To Visit: April, May, or October | Best for small crowds and pleasant weather
Admission: $14 | Advance registration is highly recommended

How To Get There:

The Colosseum is centrally located and easy to get to. There are several metro/bus stops in the area, and it is easily accessible by taxi. If you'd like, there are many group day tours available from about $40 a person.

The Great Wall – China

Where To Fly Into: Beijing, China
When To Visit: September and October | Best for pleasant weather and clearer skies
Admission: $7 to $8, depending on entrance gate | Advance registration is strongly suggested
Special Notes: Climbing the Wall can be strenuous, and sturdy shoes are a must

How To Get There:

Beijing is an hour or two from several parts of the Wall. Avoid popular Badaling, and visit a less crowded section like Mutianyu or Jinshanling. There are buses available for budget travelers, but they can eat up a lot of time. Consider hiring a taxi for the day ($80 – $120), or joining a guided tour ($40 – $60 a person).

Chichen Itza – Mexico

Where To Fly Into: Cancún, Mexico
When To Visit: May | Best for small crowds without too much summer humidity
Admission: $25 | You will have to pay two fees, and will have two tickets to hold on to while exploring

How To Get There:

Chichen Itza is about a 2-hour drive from Cancún. You can take an ADO bus there for about $12 one way and tour the ruins at your own pace. A full-day tour from Cancún will cost around $65 to $80 a person, and may include lunch and cenote swimming.

Machu Picchu – Peru

Where To Fly Into: Cusco, Peru
When To Visit: May or October | Best for smaller crowds and drier weather
Admission: From $70 | Advance registration is necessary, since only 2500 visitors are allowed in each day
Special Notes: The altitude of Machu Picchu is 8,000 feet, and Cusco is at 11,000; acclimating to the high altitude is necessary to avoid sickness

How To Get There:

There are many ways to get to Machu Picchu, with varying levels of adventure and cost. The two primary ways of reaching the mountaintop are taking a train or hiking the Inca Trail. To hike the trail, you have to reserve your permit in January, since the government limits the number of trekkers. Most choose a 4-day/3-night route, which costs around $700 or more a person. You can also do a day hike for around $150. There are three trains from Cusco to Machu Picchu, ranging from $90 one way for a budget ticket to over $500 for a luxury car.

Petra – Jordan

Where To Fly Into: Amman, Jordan
When To Visit: March to May, September to November | Best for avoiding summer heat
Admission: $71 | General admission does not include "Petra by Night," which costs $24
Special Notes: Visiting all the sites of Petra involves a lot of walking and stairs, so wear sturdy shoes

How To Get There:

If starting from Amman, you can either join a tour or take the JETT bus to Petra. The ride takes around four hours. If starting from Aqaba, you can take a bus in under two hours. Consider booking a hotel stay in Aqaba if you plan on staying for "Petra by Night," which takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday night.

Where To Fly Into: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
When To Visit: October to November | Best for pleasant weather and cheaper prices
Admission: $18 (low season) to $21 (high season) for train ticket

How To Get There:

There are three ways to get to the statue: van, train, or hiking. Of the three, taking the train is the most efficient and scenic, and your train ticket includes admission to the statue compound. Hiking to the top is best done early to avoid the afternoon heat, and takes about two to three hours. And of course, you can join a tour.

Taj Mahal – India

Where To Fly Into: Delhi, India
When To Visit: November and February | Best for avoiding peak crowds and bad weather
Admission: $16 (plus an extra $3 to visit the mausoleum itself) | Foreign tourists must join a separate queue from domestic tourists
Special Notes: Read up on common tourist scams in the area, including fake guides and rip-off camel rides

How To Get There:

The Taj Mahal is located in Agra, which is about four hours from Delhi. You can visit on a day trip, either by taking the train if you're on a budget, or by booking a tour (private tours out of Delhi cost around $100 a person). Keep in mind that the grounds are closed on Friday.
